The Illusion Conundrum, Part III: Plot Holin’

Hey, checking in here from Liz’s YA Fantasy Land, the home of plot holes upon plot holes upon plot holes.

Since this is my first big update in a while, quite a few things are happening on the Illusions front. I started writing in earnest in November, and I’ve got around 25,000 words so far, or about five chapters. I’ve been thinking of this as a rewrite, but honestly, I’m doing just as much plotting and character development on the fly as if it were a new project, so I guess I’m actually just writing. Nothing re- about it.

Along those same lines, there are quite a few things that I’m changing about the structure of the story itself. The original draft ended at a certain point, but as I’m plotting out where I want to go for this draft, I’m realizing that I may need to extend it beyond where the original ended. Which is fine! Just different.

Also, some characters are going to have to die. (Sigh.)

I’m considering a move away from the YA genre. This will need to be an ongoing thing that I’ll revisit later. My characters aren’t young enough for the YA or even NA tag.

My mantra of late:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Got a lot of miles to go on this one. But I’m finally excited about a project again, and it’s bringing me joy. Every step is like a victory.

I think I’ll post an excerpt soon. Stay tuned . . .
